Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program is a federally funded program established to improve the supply, distribution, retention, and quality of primary care and other health practitioners in medically underserved areas. The program is part of a national effort to improve access to health services through changes in the education and training of health professionals.

The mission of NVAHEC at Mason is to improve healthcare access and quality across Northern Virginia. The Center’s primary priorities are to: (1) increase diversity among health professions and (2) support multi-disciplinary/multi-professional training for practicing professionals and students in health career preparation academic programs. The Center is a resource to assist individuals interested in health careers and the preparation for admission and program completion. NVAHEC at Mason will serve as a hub of culturally tailored programs directly related to its mission. Center activities will give special attention to reaching minority, disenfranchised, immigrant, and first-generation groups and individuals in Northern Virginia.
